Guanyin Bodhisattva. Ink on paper, mounted as hanging scroll. Label at the right of the picture: “Painting by Wu Daozi of the Tang dynasty (618-907).”
From an old southern German private collection, acquired between 1970 and 2002 - Wu Daozi was the most famous court painter of the Tang dynasty. He mostly painted murals with Buddhist and Daoist figures in dynamic brush strokes. Some of his figure paintings were engraved in stone slabs and later rubbings were made of them. This is a rubbing of a quite late stone engraving attributed to him
